Wheelock Family Theatre showcased the first cohort of young playwrights to participate in its Emerging Playwrights Program (EPP) last Friday night at the Mattahunt Community Center.
A large, first-floor activity room was converted into a makeshift, flexible theatre space. And there, with the Boston mural as a backdrop, actors staged readings of the young playwrights' works.
- Eden Beleke's Paradise took a comedic look at cell phone addiction and the tensions it engenders;
- Jacarrea Garraway's Our Son finds parents' new possibilities dashed once their son drops out of college and returns home;
- Alex Drumm, Jr.'s Worst Case Scenario traps father- and son-in-law to be in an elevator where they hash out their differences, while daughter/wife-to-be stresses about the delay;
- Emily Jacob's 10 Minutes in an Elevator finds two suits trapped in an elevator and makes fun of how each cope with the situation, and with each other's coping; and
- Nate Krieger and Gus Viveiros' The End is a comedy of errors with layers upon layers of erring on top.
Wendy Lement, EPP's Program Director, noted that the playwrights have the option to revise their plays before they're staged again--next time at the Strand Theatre on December 13th @ 7 PM. Their works will also be presented at Wheelock Family Theatre on December 15th @ 7 PM. It will be interesting to see how these works develop over time.
