NEFA;s Creative Ground Offers Uplift

New England Foundation for the Arts j(NEFA) ust launched its latest iteration of the online directory and data source for New England's creative economy, called Creative Ground.
Here's how NEFA explains it:

"CreativeGround spotlights the rich range of creative people and places at work in the six New                              England states. This free online directory includes profiles for cultural nonprofits, creative businesses                  and professional artists of all disciplines."

Now, if you were already registered via MatchBook, and later CultureCount, your profile has likely survived, though some data might have been lost.  So you might want to check and update your profile there,.

If you're an artist, an arts organization, or in any way involved in the creative economy, and you haven't added your profile to this directory, it's well worth the time it takes.  Alll artists and/or creative economy types are encouraged to set up a profile. You can even showcase your portfolio. Once you've registered there post your profite to  our LinkedIn group as well.

OpEd: Why We Can;t Wait

If U.S.  Census data is to be believed, Mattapan lost nearly 10% of its population between 2000 and 2010.   This came as a surprise to those of us who live here.   Bus trips home remained congested,  and lines at the Post Office remained long.    In other words, nothing in our lived experience of the place confirmed what Census data reported.     Since then the nagging question has been, how did nearly 10,000 people leave without anyone noticing?            Now we know there’s been a concerted effort to whittle away at Mattapan’s territory, again.   This time, by selling Mattapan homeowners  on the idea that life would be better if they were Hyde Park residents.  Apparently many opted to leave Mattapan (figuratively speaking)—diluting the power of their vote in the larger pool of mostly white voters who live in Hyde Park.  And for what? Cheaper insur...

Two Times Two: Double Consciousness Cubed

Since you asked, our twin taglines point to two distinct operational tracks for  Mattapan Cultural Arts Development:  on one hand, " Climbing as we build " relates to our push to build a cultural arts center where art can happen in Mattapan; on the other hand, " Making Art Happen in Mattapan " presents a constant reminder of our ultimate goal. We'll spend the next few months cultivating a community of stakeholders:  from the inside out--inviting Mattapan residents, public officials, property owners and businesses into a conversation about what it would mean if Mattapan were an arts destination; and  from the outside in--importing the necessary skill sets and expertise to design and develop a complex, mixed-use, LEED-certified building as a focal point for the arts in Mattapan.  In the meantime we're surveying Mattapan youth and families to assess the need for what kinds of art, while cultivating a network of artists and arts organizations interest...
